Statement from the Texas Gaming Association
AUSTIN, TX - Texas Gaming Association (TGA) statement in response to the Texas House of Representatives Committee on Licensing & Administrative Procedures hearing on HJR 112, legislation that would authorize a limited number of destination resort casinos in Texas.
“I would like to thank Chairman Hamilton for guiding this issue through his Committee and ensuring that an expansion of gaming in the state is done the right way,” said Jack Pratt, Chairman of the Texas Gaming Association. “We must put Texans first and maximize opportunity for economic impact, job creation, capital investment, and increased tourism and convention business in our state. We believe the time has come to let the Texas voters decide this issue.”
“Texas is one of the great untapped global markets for development of destination resort casinos and our company is very committed to pursuing this opportunity,” said Andy Abboud, VP of Government Relations and Community Development at the Las Vegas Sands Corp., a business member of the TGA. “Creation of destination resort casinos in Texas would lead to significant capital investment in the state from world class companies. These facilities would create thousands of new jobs, expanded convention business and new tax revenue for the state and local communities.”
“Consistent polling of Texans, regardless of region or party affiliation, show they support destination resort casinos and believe gambling is a personal choice and responsibility,” said Scott Dunaway, spokesperson for the TGA. “They want the opportunity to vote on the issue and the opportunity to keep Texas dollars in Texas instead of sending money on a one-way ticket to Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico to pay for their schools and highways.”
